Chamfer measurement quantifies the bevelled edge connecting two surfaces. This is often a feature commonly found on component or hole edges of aircraft parts, structures, engines, transmissions and sub components. In many cases, edge break feature measurement is considered critical.
Why are chamfers so important to product design?
The presence of sharp edge features on components operating at high speeds or under a lot of pressure can cause areas of increased stress and can affect product performance and life cycle, as well as cause damage to other components. Therefore chamfered edges, a typically small but important dimension are introduced into the design of components to prevent the onset of wear and damage from occurring.
What is the difference between radius and chamfer measurement?
Removal of sharp corners can either be done by creating a slight radius or chamfer to the edge feature. A chamfer is a deliberate feature with a defined dimension, unlike break sharp edges (BSE) such as nominal radius or deburred features which are defined by a minimum and maximum value on a free form surface. It is important for manufacturers to monitor the chamfer angle using precision measurement tools such as GapGun.
